RONAN — Several solid singles matches and a pair of doubles wins took the Chiefs tennis team to a 4-2 win at home over Valley Christian Thursday. No. 1 singles player Hunter Shima led his team with a 6-0, 7-5, victory over the Eagles’ Christopher Manuel.
“(Hunter) had a very good match,” head coach Gordon Cummings said.
The boys’ doubles teams of Tyler Anderson and Dan Aylesworth and Tallon Fortin and Joey Dresen both had easy wins over opponents from Valley Christian, and Spencer Sucha also defeated the Eagles’ Levi Bullock, 6-1, 7-6.
The Maidens got the day off after their match with Superior was canceled, but the girls and boys traveled to Troy Tuesday. With no weather delays thus far in the season, Ronan’s been able to play five of five matches, something Cummings said he’s not sure has ever happened this early in the spring. The experience has been valuable for his players, and he expects to see continued improvement.
“The kids are coming along,” he said.
Ronan hosts the Mission Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 19, before the Maidens travel to Eureka Saturday.
