First in State: Pope, Koberg and Russell win debate titles

POLSON — Sharidan Russell and Kelsey Koberg, competitors in Policy Debate, and Megan Pope, whose event is Extemporaneous Speaking, earned first place at the Class A Montana State Speech, Debate and Drama Meet. The meet was held on Jan. 27 and 28 in Polson.

The Polson Speech and Drama Team finished strong, too. The speech team pulled down fifth place with 65 points, only three points behind fourth-place Belgrade and seven points behind third-place Stevensville. Columbia Falls won the state championship in speech with a total of 140 points, followed by Billings Central with 90 points.

Corvallis High School was the state champion in Drama with 93 points, and Billings Central finished in second place with 82 points.

Polson’s drama team finished tied for seventh place.

Individual and team finishers for Polson were:
1st Place in Policy Debate: Sharidan Russell and Kelsey Koberg
1st Place in Extemporaneous Speaking: Megan Pope
2nd Place in Serious Duo Acting: Sydney Gambrel and Krysta Seville
3rd Place in Impromptu Speaking: Megan Pope
7th Place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Logan Nutzman
8th Place in Original Oratory: Sher Afgan Tehmasap
8th Place in Classical Duo Acting: Rosie Stanfield and Michael Venters
9th Place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Isak Petersen
11th Place in Policy Debate: Reed Hovenkotter and Eric DeLay
