POLSON — Rainy weather caused a change in venue for the Polson all-school Celebration of Families Powwow. Instead of outdoors behind the Polson Middle School, the event moved indoors to Linderman gym. Due to space constraints, only kindergarten through fifth grade attended.
The crowd may have been smaller, but students were enthusiastic.
“We want to dance,” a group of fourth graders said, waiting as the drums set up.
Kindergarten students tapped their feet and showed each other the steps.
Linderman teacher Mona Friday carried the American flag to lead in the grand entry as Silent Hill drum group played.
Soon the gym was filled with dancing children and adults.
Chair of the powwow committee Molly Billedeaux said the powwow was lucky to have Alec Quequesah as the Master of Ceremonies. Not only does he have a wonderful voice, but he teaches young dancers about the meaning of powwows. Dancers go in a circle, since life is a circle. Dancers should also be respectful, not silly and should keep moving forward.
Charlie Quequesah accompanied as arena director, Billedeaux added.
“We hoped for a k-12 outdoor powwow, but the weather didn’t cooperate,” Billedeaux said, adding that she was pleased.
As for the students, the dance floor was packed the entire powwow.
