POLSON – Three blocks of downtown Polson were closed off to traffic as basketball players and fans filled the streets for the annual Flathead Lake 3-on-3 basketball tournament this past weekend.
The two-day event, first played in 1992, has grown into one of Montana’s most popular and longest- running tournaments. This late-summer classic draws more than 800 players and 200 teams each year to the streets of Polson as they battle it out in extremely competitive streetball for bragging rights and prizes.
On Saturday evening, players were able to compete in a slam dunk contest and a free-throw shooting competition. Looking to defend his slam-dunk title for the third consecutive year, Deon McLaughlin battled newcomer Julian Jones in three rounds of crowd stirring high-flying dunks. Once the dust settled, it was Jones who snatched away this year’s title and $350 prize money.
In the three-point shooting contest, it was Elly Reed who netted the championship in the ladies division, while SKC Bison Kevin Wroblewski sank more three-point shots in the men’s group for the win and the $200 prize money. Reed donated her $200 winnings to the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Reservation and Lake County.
On Sunday, after two days of heated 3-on-3 basketball, 15 bracket champions were named. Team winners were Mixed Poi Time in the adult co-ed division over Tire Depot, and in the women’s open bracket, CFA defeated Wild Women for the title.
In the largest division bracket, the men’s open recreational championship went to Purple Reign with a victory over Smokin’ Joes.
