The Polson Pirate wrestling team has jumped out to a strong start early this season. The Pirates swept Whitefish 75-0 at home on Dec. 8 before heading to the Mining City Duals in Butte, where they won three of five matches.
Against Whitefish, the Pirates didn’t give the Bulldogs anything easy, as Polson won seven of its matches by pin, and another five by forfeit in the Northwestern A victory.
In the 189-pound match, Polson grappler Marlin Burke pinned Jacob Forrest in 18 seconds, the fastest of the match. Pirate heavyweight Josiah Clairmont came close to beating Burke’s time, pinning Wolf Zinke in 36 seconds.
Drew Fouty pinned Wyatt Price in 1:00 in the 130-pound category, while Skylar Anderson (135) pinned Judah Prestegaard in 1:29.
Senior Alex Nystrom continues to lead by example, pinning his opponent in 1:30 in the 140-pound class, while Jared Young (145) pinned Austin Giles in 1:22.
Tel Motichka won by an 11-4 decision over Kyle Bowman in the 152-pound category. Mike Devlin (160) pinned Robbie Neff in 1:34.
On Friday, Polson traveled to Butte to compete in the Mining City Duals. The Pirates got off to a good start at the tournament, beating Missoula Big Sky 56-36. Eight Pirates won eight of their weight categories, and Alex Helgeson won the 105-pound class by forfeit.
Heavyweight Clairmont pinned Colter Miller in 15 seconds, while Skylar Anderson (135) pinned Ryan Glenn in 19 seconds. Dylan Moll (119) pinned Chase Cook in 41 seconds.
In round four, Polson took on Great Falls, where the Pirates faced their first tough loss of the tournament, falling 76-12.
In the 125-pound class, Feistner defeated Austin Shupe 11-1, while Drew Fouty (130) pinned Brenden Schwartz in 2:34. Clairmont finished the match by pinning Lane Urick in 3:13.
In round five, Polson was handed a 66-15 defeat from Bozeman. Polson picked up three wins against the Class AA Hawks.
Quinones picked up a win in the 112-pound class after he won by a 6-0 decision. Feistner (125) won his third straight bout by pinning Seth James in 3:40, and Clairmont won by forfeit.
On Saturday, Polson faced off with Huntley Project, winning big 66-18.
Quinones (112) won his third match of the tournament, pinning Gettit Fireling in 2:13. Teammate Fouty (130) also picked up his third win after pinning John Manning in 53 seconds.
Feistner won his fourth straight bout by forfeit, while Clairmont also secured his fourth straight tournament win by pinning Jacob Oblander in 34 seconds. In round 10, Polson edged Helena Capital 48-30 in a closely contested match. Clairmont went five for five at the tournament after he won his final match against Tanner Martin by pin in 29 seconds. Feistner also remained unbeaten after pinning Alex Markle in 4:59.
Quinones won his fourth tournament match in the 112-pound class after pinning Kelly Eller in 1:25. Fouty also went four for five, finishing his final match by pinning Lawrence Lesofski in 1:04.
Polson’s next match will be held in Coeur D’ Alene at the Tri State meet beginning Dec. 16.
