ST. IGNATIUS – Mission/Charlo's Janeal McDonald proved how clutch a player she can be as she drove in the winning run during the bottom of the 7th inning in a 4-3, season-opening victory over Plains Saturday.
Mission took a 1-0 lead during the second inning as Loren Erickson hit a double, and then stole third base before darting towards home to take the lead. Erickson led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 3-4.
Mission pitcher Kyla Olson allowed only one hit, walked three, and fanned 11 to pick up the victory.
Plains fought back during the top of the fourth, putting up a quick two runs to grab a 2-1 lead. Mission rose to the occasion, though, tying the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Trotters regained the lead during the top of the seventh inning, scoring one run to lead 3-2.
Loren Erickson sent the ball soaring to begin the bottom of the seventh for Mission, getting a base hit. She then stole second base at the perfect time. McDonald stepped up and did what she does best, giving the Bulldogs a clutch hit to win the game. McDonald stepped up and cranked the ball to the mid-field fence, allowing Erickson to jog on towards the home plate.
Along with Erickson's 3-4 performance at the plate for Mission, McDonald went 2-3, and Emily Gillingham went 1-2. Kinley Pope and McDonald both had two RBI on the day.
Thompson led the Trotters with their only hit of the game, going 1-4.
