Mission Valley teams see fastpitch state tournament action

MISSOULA – Eight Mission Valley girls fastpitch teams saw plenty of softball action this past weekend during the three-day Montana USA Junior Olympic State Softball Tournament held in Missoula.

In the under-10 bracket on Friday, the Mission Valley All-Stars clobbered Belgrade 16-7 to open the tournament with a win; however, they fell 11-2 in a late afternoon game to the Electric City Heat.

The Polson Lil’ Lakers dropped their first game of the tournament 8-5 to the Great Falls Selects.

On Saturday morning, the Mission Valley All-Stars defeated valley rivals Polson Lil’ Lakers 10-5.

In a mid-afternoon match up with the 406 Playmakers, the Mission Valley All-Stars saw their tournament championship run come to an end with an 11-2 loss.

The Polson Purple Wave, an under-12 team, got rolling Friday evening with an 11-0 shutout win over MT Wildfire but couldn’t keep the momentum going Saturday as they fell 12-5 to the Bozeman Stealers and 13-9 to MT Xtreme and finished the tournament with a record of 1-2.

Three squads, the Polson Lakers, Insanity and Mighty Maidens represented the Mission Valley in the under-14 group. The Mighty Maidens fell in their opening bracket game 12-4 to the Electric City Heat and closed out the tournament with a 26-6 loss to the MT Avalanche on Saturday.

Insanity struggled in their first game on Friday with a 16-2 loss to the Great Falls Selects. On Saturday, Insanity dominated the Sparks 14-6 for their first win of the tournament; however, the MT Warriors, 11-2, eliminated them in the next game.

The Polson Lakers finished the tournament with a 2-2 record and was the only valley team to play on Sunday. The Lakers posted back-to-back wins to start the tournament, defeating MT Avalanche/ Gagner 7-1 on Friday and MT Xtreme 1-0 on Saturday morning before falling 7-3 to the MT Avalanche late Saturday afternoon. The Lakers fell in the losers out bracket Sunday to the MT Avalanche 8-3.

18U teams Insanity and Polson Purple Rain finished the state tournament with identical 1-2 records. Both teams started the tournament hot on Friday, with the Insanity defeating Frenchtown Fury 14-5 and the Polson Purple Rain blasting the Billings Bombers 13-1.

On Saturday, both teams lost back-to-back games to end their seasons. Insanity was shutout by Billings Force 9-0 and fell in a close 12-10 game with Electric City Heat, while Purple Rain dropped a 14-3 game against MT Avalanche and a 9-3 game to Billings Tropics.
