ARLEE — To say the Warrior grapplers have been busy is an understatement. The Warriors hosted Deer Lodge, Noxon and Florence on Dec. 6, traveled to Thompson Falls on Dec. 8 and wrestled in the Superior Invitational Tournament on Dec. 10.
The Warriors finished with 15 wins and seven losses on their home turf at the double dual/mixer meet in Arlee.
“We had two mats on the floor, and for an hour and a quarter it was solid wrestling,” said head coach Ken Hill. “We wrestled good at home and got in some good wrestling against some of our toughest conference opponents.”
On Thursday, the Warriors beat the Thompson Fall BlueHawks 42-33 on Thursday. Despite having to forfeit several weight classes, the Warriors fared well. In the 145-pound division, Zach Tameler pinned Jake Nygaard in 32 seconds. Albert Plant won the 160-pound class after pinning Jake Zunino in 1:26. Clayton Trimble pinned Eric Milner in 4:39 and Cody North, 285-pound, pinned Braxton Eurbanks in 2:19. Arlee’s Daniel Dunlop was pinned by the Bluehawk’s Wade Gascon, and Colten Bray defeated Warrior Donovan McDonald 12-6.
At the Superior Invitational Tournament, the Warriors placed seventh as a team. Tameler (152) and Trimble (189) both placed second in their weight classes. Tameler beat opponents from Thompson Falls and Eureka to make it to the championship before losing to a Libby opponent.
Trimble won matches against Browning and Libby to advance, but lost a decision to Mission/Charlo's Barett Sargent in a close 6-3 match. Warriors Nathan Bertollt and Cody North placed high in Superior. Bertollt lost his first match but came back to win the rest of the day against wrestlers from Eureka, Thompson Falls, Mission/Charlo and finally Frenchtown to place third in the 145-pound weight class.
Cody North outmatched opponents from Cut Bank, Frenchtown and Libby to place third in the tournament. His only loss on Saturday came from Mission/Charlo's Chad Anderson in a 7-4 decision in the semifinal match.
“We are getting tougher, and our technique has improved a lot since the beginning,” Hill said.
“If we can continue to improve our conditioning and technique, all the wrestlers will do well this season.”
This week, the Warriors will travel to Superior on Thursday for a mixer, then to Eureka on Friday and Saturday for events.
