News from Charlo Special Olympics

The Charlo Special Olympics team turned in an outstanding performance at last week’s 2019 Spring Area Games.

This year, the games drew nearly 500 participants representing 28 delegations from around the Five Valleys Area. After months of training, Charlo’s team of four athletes and four unified partners showed up prepared, focused and anxious to compete.

At the athletics competition held at Frenchtown High School track on Wednesday, Charlo took first in the 100 meter dash, first and second in the 200, second in the 50, two firsts and a second in turbo javelin and third in the softball throw.

Charlo’s two relay teams each handily won their respective divisions in the 4x100. Volunteer coach Glenn Foust credits throwing coach Destiny Manuel and relay coach Brooklyn Foust for the team’s success in those events.

Thursday’s Bocce competition took place in Missoula. Bocce is an ancient sport with a worldwide following that has become a Special Olympics mainstay. Charlo fielded four two-person bocce teams this year: “Oystercatchers” Joseph Davis and Kiana Brown; “Nutcrackers” Nateesha Rossbach and Hayden Smith; “Chickadees” Tayleigh Garcia and Tayre Brown; and “Goonybirds” Hayden Pierre and Brooke Alder. Charlo’s four teams pulled off the near impossible by winning every bocce game (except when two Charlo teams had to play each other).

On and off the field, Charlo athletes and unified partners exuded poise, confidence, competence, camaraderie and good sportsmanship. They worked and played as a team.

Next week, May 15-17, Charlo takes its Special Olympics team to compete at the State Games in Great Falls.
