RONAN – On Friday, Ronan City crews received some help cleaning up the city streets from more than 100 student volunteers from various Ronan High School extracurricular and athletic groups.
According to Ronan High School student advisor Heather Gray, teaching students to take ownership of the community in which they live was a big focus of the community service project. Learning the value of giving back was another project lesson.
Armed with rubber gloves and garbage bags, the students scattered and took to the city streets and along U.S. Highway 93 on foot to pick up trash and debris that had been hidden under the winter snow.
Dozens of full bags of trash indicated how successful the students were in their battle.
“I think this is fantastic,” said Brian Bergquist, Ronan Area Chamber of Commerce manager. “So often community events are focused on adults only and tend to not really think about the kids. Today, the kids get to be really involved, see what’s going on, help out and make a difference in their community. I think that’s a really good thing.”
