Flying high: Pirates, Lady Pirates open season with 2nd place finish in Corvallis

CORVALLIS - The Polson track season got off to a good start Saturday as the Pirates and Lady Pirates both picked up second-place finishes in their first meet of 2011.

The Lady Pirates finished the day with 76 team points, just 18 points behind home-standing Corvallis, to finish second in a field of a dozen teams. For the Lady Pirates, it was their first meet since winning the Class A state title last year.

On the track, the Lady Pirates were led by freshman Claudia Hewston, who finished first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:39 and second in the 1,600-meter event at 6:01. Anna DiGiallonardo also had a good day for Polson, finishing second in the 100-meter dash in 12.95 seconds and second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.81 seconds. DiGiallonardo also earned points in the field events with a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 1 and 3/4 inches.

The Banner sisters led the Lady Pirates in the field events as McCall finished first in the pole vault while McKenzie was second. Both cleared a height of seven feet in the event.

The Lady Pirates had several other top-six finishes during the event as Chelsey Cree was fourth in the 200-meter dash, Katharina Medland was fifth in the 400-meter run and Maddie Hewston took fourth in the 800-meter and 3,200-meter events.

The Pirates also picked up a second-place finish Saturday, ending the day with 78 team points to come in 10 points behind the home team from Corvallis.

Brock Bleazard had the top finish of the day for the Pirates as he earned first in the pole vault after clearing a height of 11 feet, 6 inches.

Chris Cote had a good day for Polson, finishing second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.28 seconds and fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.09 seconds.

Clark Repel picked up a second place finish for the Pirates in the shot put with a toss of 45-feet, 8 inches while Mike Devlin was second in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 6 inches.

Elsewhere for the Pirates Saturday, Mike Devlin was fifth in the 100-meter dash, Alex Nystrom was fourth in the 3,200 meter run, Jimmy Bjorge was fifth in the 3,200, Jesse Alfiero was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles and fourth in the pole vault, Dale Bissam was third in the shot put, Riley Sampson was third in the discus and Drew Fouty was third in the Pole Vault. The Pirates’ 1,600-meter relay team finished third with a time of 3:53.3 while the 400-meter relay team was fourth with a time of 47.7 seconds.
