RONAN – More than 175 golf enthusiasts, and 900 concert viewers came together Friday, July 15 to raise money for a good cause during the 24th Annual Mission Valley Scholarship Tim Ryan's Golf Tournament and Writer's Night at the Mission Mountain Golf Course in Ronan. Area golfers couldn’t ask for better weather, as sunny skies and 70 degrees made for a perfect day at the course.
Tournament play was a five-man scramble in which teams of five used the best ball out of their group to play on. The day was split into a morning round, beginning at 7:30 a.m., and a second round at 1 p.m. The cost to play was $85 per person, with no age limit for participants.
“Everything turned out wonderful,” Ryan said. “It was a pretty day and everyone had a great time.”
The event originated after county music artist Tim Ryan, who was raised in St. Ignatius, decided to reward students from Ronan and St. Ignatius who’ve worked hard in the classroom and to give back to a supportive community. Over the past 23 years, the annual event has raised more than $125,000 for scholarships that have been awarded to Mission Valley students.
“We raise around $13,000 every year,” Ryan said. “We do it to benefit kids who have a 3.2 grade point average or higher who are attending a state college.”
A staggering 900 fans came out for writer’s night to watch up-and-coming area talent perform. Performances by Tim Ryan and special guests the Mission Mountain Wood Band followed.
“It was a big crowd for me,” Ryan said. “There’s been a few years where we had maybe 1,300 a time or two, but last night was a big crowd.”
Ryan added that next year will be the final year for the event, which will occur around the third week of July. To celebrate, Ryan says it will be the biggest event yet.
“It’s going to be a huge blowout,” he added. “We’re trying to get the band “Exile" and possibly Vince Gill to come out and perform.”
Ryan contributes the ongoing success of the tournament to the Mission Mountain Golf Course , and Dennis Anderson of Anderson Broadcasting for doing a fantastic job with the event each year.
