RONAN – A 16-year-old shooting suspect was taken into custody by law enforcement on Saturday, Nov. 17, according to a report from the Ronan Police Department. The 25-year-old shooting victim is in stable condition. Names are not being released at this time.

The incident began when the Ronan Police Department responded to a report of an individual seeking treatment at St. Luke Community hospital on Thursday, Nov. 15. After an investigation, officers determined that the shooting occurred at the 300 block of 12th Ave., northwest.

On Saturday, a Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Officer spotted the shooting suspect in Pablo. The officer attempted a traffic stop to apprehend the suspect, but the driver failed to yield and a pursuit ensued.

The Ronan Police Department K9 team and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office were called for assistance. During the pursuit, a 9mm handgun was thrown from the vehicle and two of the occupants switched spots. The shooting suspect was in the driver’s seat when the vehicle crashed on Duck Road. The occupants were ejected, and the vehicle was on fire. The shooting suspect fled on foot and was eventually taken into custody. The four occupants in the car were taken to the hospital.

The Ronan Police Department thanked CSKT Tribal Law and Order, Lake County Attorney’s Office, Lake County Youth Court, Lake County Dispatch, Montana Highway Patrol, St. Ignatius Police Department and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office for their cooperation and assistance in the case.
