The Polson Lady Pirates opened their season on the road against a talented Hamilton Broncs team, when Polson fell 3-0. For Hamilton, Casey Shifflett connected for a goal during the 16th minute to give the Broncs an early lead. Later in the half, Hamilton’s Bri Huggans added to her teams lead, giving the Lady Pirates an early deficit to overcome.

The Lady Pirates continued to struggle during the second half, when Sami Kratofil added the third and final goal for Hamilton.

Polson’s Robinson finished with six saves, while Shannon McGinnis added eight more.

The Polson girls soccer team bounced back from their loss to Hamilton on Friday, Sept. 2 when they downed Corvallis in a Class A non-conference match-up on the road 2-1. The Lady Pirates faced an early deficit, but fought back with the help of Madeline Hewston scoring in the 55th minute of the second half, Sara Robinson sent a through ball to Sarah Howell who sent the ball to Hewston on the wing who made the shot from 25 yards.

Howell then scored at the 62nd minute mark when Olivia Hart kicked a 20 yard ball to Sarah Howell mid-field who tapped the ball in to take the 2-1 victory.

According to Head Coach Michael Hewston, Hart played well against Corvallis’ overload attack and jay run.

“Olivia read both well and typically read the passing lane and picked off the pass,” Hewston said. “Olivia didn’t back away from contact once. She played her position with style and pride. More importantly she did her job.”

Hewston added, the new defense junior varsity coach Jose Franco’s teaching worked well.

“The girls played with patience and maintained their shape throughout the match,” Hewston said.

Other Lady Pirates who stepped up when needed were Sara Robinson and Monica Cleveland. Robinson played the midfield position well, Hewston said. She positioned herself as an option for the one touch attack, which the team has been working on in practice.

Cleveland worked well on the wing with Hart to help move the ball from their defensive third up the line.

“In addition, using Howell and Madsen as strikers meant the Pirates could attack from any one of three fronts at any point in time,” Hewston said.

The Lady Pirates host Livingston’s Park High School in Polson on Sept. 10. Hewston says his team needs to maintain the same level of kinetic energy they had against Corvallis. He added he will be working on crashing the goal after the shot, passing and moving during practice this week.
