POLSON — College plans are solid for Polson High School senior Clint Cooper; he’ll be attending Montana State University on a the school’s Presidential Scholarship.
The scholarship covers tuition and changes in tuition for the next four years, Cooper said, as well as giving him a $1,250 stipend each semester.
Cooper plans a double major in computer science and mathematics or computer engineering.
The application process for the scholarship was difficult since it was during Christmas break, Cooper said, a traditionally relaxing time.
But it was worth it since he was chosen as one of the top 40 out of 300 applicants. The 40 students went to the MSU campus in Bozeman for an interview in front of each of the department heads, the head of the honors college and a few honor students.
“I was nervous going into it,” Cooper said, but he decided to answer humorously in the 15-minute interview, and his audience responded well.
Cooper’s favorite classes in high school have been computer classes, physics, calculus and science. He’s been active in Business Professionals of America, robotics, National Honor Society and as a junior ambassador for the Polson Chamber of Commerce and always has had an interest in medieval times, particularly war machines and methods of conquest.
Cooper has also received a state level Elks scholarship for $500, a laptop and printer from the Mission Valley Elks and the MSU Governor’s Best and Brightest Scholarship for $1,000 per semester for eight semesters.
Cooper plans to work for the Polson School District this summer, under Ceth Eslick, before heading to Bozeman in the fall. His parents are Marion and Darlene Cooper.
