A few kids braved the ice-cold water on the Mission Valley Aquatic Center waterslide, but waterslider Ari Phillips said he thought the water was even colder than Flathead Lake.

More youngsters grabbed the chance to let out their inner artist for the quick draw chalk painting on downtown Polson sidewalks. Rainbows, flowers, mountains and clouds were favorites.

For adults, Polson city commissioners and other folks played a horse-racing game complete with fuzzy stick horses. It didn’t involve running, just dice throwing and crowd participation

Children and their parents and, in some cases, grandparents, were all downtown for “Light Up the Town Celebrate Our City Center.”

The event began at 4 p.m., although many people came early for the dedication of Barry Webb’s bench or even earlier to cruise the Farmer’s Market.

Visitors and area folks could enjoy the food and beverages from local Polson eateries, such as pulled pork sandwiches from Grills Gone Wild, stir fry from Quinn’s Wrap Shack, cheeseburgers from the Mission Valley Cruisers or wine from Mission Mountain Winery.

Then there was entertainment. Polson resident Dennis DeVries said he enjoyed the music by “Mega Karma” although he didn’t get out on the dance floor. “Mega Karma” played from 6 to 8 p.m. and then the “Big Sky Mudflaps” took the stage at 8 p.m. for listening and dancing fun.

According to Karen McMullen, chair of the event, it was “overall totally fabulous.”

The purpose of the event, McMullen said, was a celebration of the whole Streetscape and Third and Main as the center of town. The committee sold pavers and maybe a couple of bulb-outs and two more benches.

The weather cooperated although there was some wind, and it was a beautiful sunlit evening.
