CHARLO – Charlo Vikings and Lady Vikings basketball teams picked up wins at home Friday night as they defeated the Darby Tigers and Lady Tigers in nonconference Class C action.
The girls won, 58-36, and the boys came out on top, 66-44.
The Lady Vikings quickly raced out to a 18-5 lead in the first quarter and closed out the first half of the game with an 18-point 36-18 halftime lead.
The Lady Vikings stayed ahead for the majority of the contest and were up by as much as 20 at one point before a run by the Lady Tigers near the end of the third quarter closed the gap at 44-32.
In the fourth quarter, Charlo’s defense allowed only four points by the Lady Tigers’ offense, while the Lady Vikings’ offense finished the quarter on a 14-4 scoring run.
The 58-36 victory was the fourth in a row for the Lady Vikings.
Three Lady Vikings scored in double digits with Kaitlin Cox scoring 17 points, Carlee Fryberger at 12 and Tyrah Hammond at 11.
“On offense it was good to see the girls have fun, three girls in double figures and having nine different girls scoring in a varsity game is going to be an important role in our postseason play,” Lady Vikings’ head coach Bret Thompson said.
With a just two games remaining, the 12-6 Lady Vikings head into tournament play with lofty expectations and a little trepidation.
“In postseason, I’m always nervous about where we are and if we can adjust to the different types of play from our district. So, time will tell,” said Thompson.
On the boys' side, the Vikings were quickly down 0-4 to start the game. Vikings head coach Reese Cox called a time out. “I told them we have to stop allowing dribble penetration on our zone and make them start passing the ball - no more dribbling,” Cox said. “On the offensive end we just need to stay calm and confident and the shots will fall, once we get a bucket to fall let’s go down and get a steal and run the floor.”
Following coach Cox’s score, steal, score philosophy, the Vikings went on a 15-point scoring run to take a 15-4 lead. The Tigers had a brief scoring run of their own, finishing the first quarter down by five points 17-12.
In the second quarter, the Tigers got as close as two points 19-17, before the Vikings took control with a 13-3 scoring run ending the half with a 32-20 lead.
The Vikings’ defense stifled the Tigers’ offense, while the Vikings’ offense outscored the Tigers 19-5 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, with the game in hand, the bench finished play for the 66-42 victory.
“I was very pleased with the boys' performance,” Cox said. “The line-up I started with was different than the norm, but I was very happy with how they all meshed together and it didn’t seem to cause a let up at all.”
Senior Tyson Petticrew led the Vikings with 25 points, while Landers Smith followed up with 15 points and Toby Odom added 12 more.
With two games left in the regular season, Petticrew is flirting with surpassing the 1,000-career points mark.
There is some tweaking to be done, before the 13-4 Vikings head into the postseason. “I feel that we are very close to being ready for districts,” Cox said. “There are still some strategies I want to fine tune and perfect, and those will get there in these next two weeks before tipoff.”
Both the Vikings and Lady Vikings will be back in action on their home court Thursday, facing Arlee with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff for the Lady Vikings and a 7 p.m. game time for the Vikings.
