RONAN — With their donation to the Ronan Bread Basket, the Northwest Counties Farm Bureau showed its community spirit.

“We’re active in the community,” Margaret Poole, NCFB representative, said, adding that the group awards four $500 scholarships to high school seniors in Lake, Flathead, Sanders, Lincoln, Mineral and Missoula counties.

The donation also helped kick off a fundraising effort for the Bread Basket. Vice president Gloria Kramer said the group hopes to raise $5,000 to qualify for matching funds from Town Pump. The Bread Basket has until the end of November to raise $5,000 for the matching funds.

Numbers of clients have been rising, Kramer said, with the food bank assisting 200 families in July.

With the Plum Creek Mill closing and a wet spring delaying people from getting into the wood and a bad economy, it’s been a tough year for families.

If anyone would like to donate, the Bread Basket is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Kramer added.
