Sentence revoked for teen who caused child’s death

POLSON — On Jan. 10, Judge James A. Manley revoked the six-year deferred sentence of Chasen Curley, 18, of Ronan, for criminal endangerment and sentenced him to time in the Pine Hills Youth Correctional Facility in Miles City.
County Attorney Steve Eschenbacher said the Pine Hills program can be up to nine months.
“If he fails, he can be brought for further revocation proceedings,” he said last week. If he completes the program, Curley would be on probation again.
Eschenbacher said Curley admitted to drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana and other violations of the terms of his probation.
Manley originally gave Curley a six-year deferred sentence on May 24, 2017 for an amended charge of criminal endangerment. He also ordered him to perform 300 hours of community service and report to him monthly.
Curley was ordered to pay restitution of up to $13,500 for reimbursement of counseling for the victim’s family should they receive it, Eschenbacher said.
On Thanksgiving Day, 2016, Curley backed up over Philip Shourds Jr., then pulled forward and left the Northwood Trailer Park in Pablo, a court document states. At a March 2017 court hearing, Curley took responsibility for causing the boy’s death. He was originally charged with negligent homicide.
The boy’s father, Philip Shourds Sr., filed a civil suit on May 26, 2017 against Curley, his foster parents, the Northwood Community Trailer Park and its board members.
