Editor,
Hello, my name is Whisper Camel and I am a tribally-appointed member of the Flathead Reservation Fish and Wildlife Board. The board serves as the body charged with implementing the State-Tribal Cooperative Agreement; which governs non-tribal member bird hunting and fishing on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The agreement, enacted 21 years ago, establishes a framework for the Tribes and State to cooperatively manage fish and game bird resources on the reservation, and provides recommendations for joint resource management plans.
The board consists of three state-appointed representatives, three tribally-appointed representatives, and one federal representative. I am a wildlife biologist currently employed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Natural Resource Department. Though not a bird hunter myself, I have fished on the reservation most of my life. As a tribal representative, I would like to open up communication to any tribal members or descendants who have opinions regarding the management of game bird hunting or fishing on the reservation. If you have any concerns or comments please e-mail me at whisper4wildlife@gmail.com or call 406-471-7791.
Also, we have periodic public meetings where individuals are encouraged to attend and respectfully express their opinions about the agreement, listen to decisions made by the board, or become more informed of the great work being carried out of this agreement by both the tribes and state. The next scheduled meeting will be June 1 at the Polson Library at 6:30 p.m.
Thank you,
Whisper Camel
