Ronan wrestlers place second at home tournament

RONAN – Over the weekend, 18 wrestling programs from around the state participated in the Ronan Chiefs-hosted 49th annual Dave Edington Western Montana Duals wrestling tournament.
“The tournament ran very smooth and was an overall success,” Chiefs wrestling head coach Dylan Kramer said.
Coach Kramer also thanked the community, “Because without the support and help from the volunteer workers we wouldn’t have been able to have the tournament.”
Ronan went 4-0 in pool action on Friday, as the Chiefs opened with a 42-36 victory against Glacier. Ronan went on to defeat Clark Fork 76-0 and Broadwater 51-19, before winning, 45-28 against another Class A team in Corvallis.
“As a team, we competed very well,” Kramer said. “They have been working very hard in the practice room and it showed.”
In the championship bracket on Saturday, Ronan defeated Mission/Charlo 46-27 before slipping past Libby 37-33 in the semifinals.
That set up a championship dual between Ronan and Frenchtown. Frenchtown ran away with that dual, winning 54-15.
“I am very proud of each one of our individual athletes,” Kramer said. “Whether it was going out and getting a big pin for us or even not giving up a pin. Each athlete competed at an extremely high level to help out the team.”
Mission/Charlo finished sixth in the two-day tournament.
In the first day of pool play, Mission/Charlo squeaked by Sentinel JV 39-32, defeated Hamilton by criteria 36-36 and fell to Columbia Falls 42-30.
In Saturday’s championship matches, Mission/Charlo was outperformed by Ronan 46-27, but bounced back and blanked Flathead JV, 49-0.
And for fifth-place, Thompson Falls defeated Mission/Charlo, 39-33.
Both Ronan and Mission/Charlo will be back on the mats Friday and Saturday, Ronan at the Rocky Mountain Classic in Missoula, while Mission/Charlo travel to Choteau for the Choteau Tournament.
