Pirates split pair, Lady Pirates down Flathead

The Pirates picked up a conference win and dropped a game to a Class AA school this week as Polson downed Whitefish Saturday after falling to Flathead Tuesday.

Starters Louis Mohr, Sheldon Fisher, Kyle Bagnell and Vince DiGiallonardo combined to score 38 of the Pirates' 58 points in a 58-38 win at Whitefish Saturday. Mohr led the way with 19 points while Fisher and Bagnell each notched 10 and DiGiallonardo added nine.

The Pirates wasted no time building a lead in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 17-6 advantage after eight minutes of play. Polson continued to stretch the lead in the second frame, using a 14-9 run to take a 31-15 lead into the halftime break. The Pirates were on cruise control in the second half, holding off the Bulldogs to pick up a 20-point win.

Gage Vasquez led the Bulldogs with 10 points as Whitefish fell to 5-5 (0-3) with the loss.
The Pirates saw a fourth-quarter lead vanish at home Tuesday as Polson fell to visiting Flathead, 61-57.

In a back-and-forth battle, the Braves opened the game with a 16-15 lead after one quarter of play but the Pirates fought back with 12-8 surge in the second quarter to grab a 27-24 halftime advantage. The teams battled to a draw in the third frame, both adding 18 points, as the Pirates continued to lead entering the final eight minutes, 45-42. Polson could not hold on down the stretch, though, as Flathead outscored the Pirates 19-12 in the fourth to get the win.

Only four Pirates were able to score in the contest as Mohr led the way with 21 points while Bagnell added 18, Tyler Krell had 10 and DiGiallonardo scored eight.

With the win and the loss this week, the Pirates sit 6-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

A masterful performance from the foul line by Lady Pirate junior Riley Kenney helped Polson to a win at Kallispell Tuesday. Kenney finished the game 14-17 from the charity stripe, including a crucial 9-12 performance in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Pirated picked up a 61-50 victory over the Flathead Bravettes. Mackenzie Banner also made all eight of her foul shots for the Lady Pirates in the win as Polson finished 25-36 from the foul line in the win.

Polson narrowly outscored the Bravettes in all four quarters to get the win as they Lady Pirates led 9-5 after one quarter and 17-12 at the half. Polson won the third-quarter battle by two before outscoring Flathead 27-23 in the fourth to hold on for the win.

Kenney led the way in the win with 30 points while Banner added 10, Breanne Kelley and Jonna Grant each scored eight points, Nini Orozco-Charlo scored four and Heidi Rausch added one point.

With the win, the Lady Pirates improved to 5-4.

The Pirates will be on the road for a pair of games this week as they play at Hamilton Thursday and at Stevensville Saturday. The Lady Pirates will take on both teams at home.
