It was another up and down week for the Chiefs as Ronan broke a four-game losing streak with a win at Mission Thursday before dropping a game at Missoula Big Sky Saturday.
The Chiefs and Bulldogs took time to recognize stroke awareness in Mission Thursday as Ronan coach Steve Woll made his return to coach against his former team.
Mission scored the game's opening basket and led 4-3 in the opening moments before the Chiefs' offense came to life. Three-pointers by Kevin Wroblewski and Justin Dustybull and a three-point play by Marcus Hungerford got Ronan rolling as the Chiefs used an 11-0 run to go up 14-4. Ronan continued to add to its lead, taking a 22-9 advantage into the second quarter.
The Bulldogs came to life at the beginning of the second frame, using a 6-0 spurt to cut the lead to seven but Ronan answered with 11 straight points to go up 33-15. The Chiefs tacked on a few more points before the half to take a 42-21 lead at the break.
The Chiefs cruised in the second half to pick up a 66-37 victory.
Wroblewski led the way for the Chiefs in the win with 15 points and four assists while
Dustybull added 14 points and five rebounds.
Brady Oakland led the Chiefs in rebounding in the win with six.
Free throws were the difference against Big Sky Saturday as the Chiefs sank just 10-22 from the foul line in a 63-58 loss.
"We played pretty well but we just shot ourselves in the foot at the free throw line. That will do it every time," Woll said. "We had opportunity after opportunity. It was a great game all the way through, though."
Big Sky jumped out to a 16-13 lead after the opening quarter but the Chiefs closed the gap in the second frame to tie the score at 29 at the half.
Big Sky regained the lead in the third, taking a 44-40 lead into the fourth quarter before outscoring the Chiefs by one in the final frame.
"We played good defense. I thought we did some good things on the offensive side. We played as a team," Woll said. "We may have lost, but that game will help us down the road. It was a good experience for us, even though we got the loss."
Dustybull led the Chiefs with 15 points and eight rebounds in the loss while Marcus Hungerford added 12 points and four boards.
The Maidens continue to look for their first win of the season after dropping a pair of games to Mission and Big Sky this week.
Both teams struggled to score in the opening quarter as the Maidens visited Mission Thursday.
Mission got on the board first with an inside basket by Stephanie Lewandowski and led 3-0 late in the quarter before Tailyr Irvine got Ronan on the board with a jumper 11 seconds before the buzzer. LaGlen Mitchell was able to score before the quarter ended and Mission led 5-2 after one quarter of play.
Mission used a pair of steals to get layups that pushed the Lady Bulldog lead to 9-2 but a jumper by Irvine and a free throw by Courtney Clairmont cut the Mission advantage to 9-5. Mission pushed the lead to 21-11 at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs pulled away in the second half, outscoring Ronan by 10 in the third quarter and five in the fourth to pick up a 49-23 win.
Irvine led the Maidens with seven points in the loss while Clairmont added four.
The Maidens found themselves overmatched at home Saturday as they fell to Class AA Missoula Big Sky, 45-13.
The Eagles jumped out to a 20-2 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back as they cruised to the win.
Ronan was led by Clairmont with four points in the loss while Justice Burland and Mariah Cheff each added three.
Both the Chiefs and Maidens will be in action Thursday as the Chiefs host Whitefish while the
Maidens face the Lady Bulldogs on the road. Both teams will be at home Saturday as Ronan hosts Superior.
