Arlee area road openings, closures, travel hazards announced
News from CSKT Division of Fire
The South Fork Primitive Area roads are now open except for the Liberty Meadows road and the Belmore Slough road. Please exercise caution while in the South Fork Primitive Area and check in at the gate. There are still fire personnel working in the area.
Those traveling in the recent burned areas of the South Fork Primitive Area should be aware of the following dangers:
– Falling Trees - Bring a chainsaw in case there are trees across the road. It may be clear on the way in, but on the way out trees may have fallen. When you’re in the burned area be careful where you park, as trees can come down at any time.
– Rolling Material - When driving in the burned area of both the Liberty and Black Fires be on the lookout for rolling debris as it is very steep in areas.
– Wind - On windy days it would be safe to say to stay clear of the two fires in the South Fork Primitive Area.
– Rain - Washout situations could arise with a heavy rainfall. The roads get very muddy and it is deep in areas.
With no cell service in these areas be prepared before entering the South Fork Primitive Area. If you have questions or concerns regarding this notice, please contact Division of Fire at 676-2550 or contact C.T. Camel, Fire Prevention Specialist, at 406-676-2550 ext. 6407 or email: ct.camel@cskt.org or Devlin Lafrombois, Fire Prevention Tech at ext. 6410 or email: devlinl@cskt.org.
Open burning season begins
News from CSKT Division of Fire
The Division of Fire informs the public that open debris burning started on the Flathead Indian Reservation on Sunday, Oct. 1. A burn permit is not needed from Oct. 1st-Nov. 30. Current fire danger on the Flathead Reservation is moderate. The DOF stresses safety when burning.
Only two types of debris burning are allowed in Montana:
Agricultural debris - debris created from farming, ranching, and gardening.
Wildland debris - debris created from the natural accumulations of needles, grasses, leaves, shrubs, limbs and trees and debris created from unnatural accumulations of fuel resulting from management activities such as land clearing or timber harvesting.
Those who intend to burn should have the following in place:
– A current weather forecast for their local area
– Water source (such as a hose, buckets, pond or lake)
– Fire tools or equipment depending on the size of the burn
Enough help to respond in the event that fire behavior increases.
Caution
Do not burn when high or erratic winds are forecast or dry conditions prevail. Do not attempt to bury any burning material as fire can and will burn underground, sometimes for several months.
Burn barrels
If burn barrels are going to be used, the DOF requests that only agricultural or wildland debris is burned in them. Burn barrels should not be used to burn garbage.
For more information call the Division of Fire at 676-2550.
