POLSON – This weekend saw a little more than 50 competitors take part in the 6th annual Polson Triathlon, delivering personal bests, incredible personal experiences and a new course record set at the Olympic distance race.
Twenty-one-year-old Helena-native and University of Montana senior, Erika Ackerlund covered the 1.5-kilometer (approximately one-mile) open water swim, 40-kilometer (24.9-mile) bike ride and 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) run with an impressive time of 02:06:13 to secure the first ever overall victory by a woman.
Ackerlund’s time shattered the women’s course record set by Sue Huse in 2013 by a full eight minutes. The former women’s record holder and two-time women’s champion Huse finished second with a time of 02:15:43 followed by Erin Lyons with a time of 02:24:18.
“I came here two years ago,” Ackerlund said. “I was pretty new (to racing) back then.” In that race, Ackerlund finished 19th overall and third in the women’s class with a time of 02:31:25.
Since then, Ackerlund has been making her mark in the triathlon world. Back in November, she won her third NCAA Women’s College Triathlon National Championship and in April, was first among women and third overall during the Grizzly Triathlon in Missoula.
In the men’s race it was Great Falls’ Joel Bischoff who broke the tape first for the men with a time of 02:09:36 ahead of Trent Renshaw (02:13:53) and Chuck Dumke (02:14:12).
It was Bischoff’s first attempt at the Polson Triathlon.
“We have family in Columbia Falls,” Bischoff said. “We were visiting them this weekend and decided to come and try this race.”
Bischoff is no stranger to triathlon competition nor the podium.
As a member of the Air Force Triathlon Team, Capt. Bischoff placed second at the Armed Forces Triathlon Championships back in June at Point Mugu, California.
Recently, Capt. Bischoff just returned from competing in Germany during the 2017 World Military Triathlon Championships as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces Triathlon Team.
In addition to fitness, the triathlon is also a fundraiser. All proceeds from the race benefit the Mission Valley Aquatics Center and the
center’s local youth swimming programs.
