RONAN – Kids are selling cherries by the pound to help raise money for summer field trips with the Boys and Girls Club of the Flathead Indian Reservation and Lake County.
Donna Diaz, 8, held up a box of red cherries for a customer to sample. “They are really good,” she said. She has an expert opinion on the taste after sampling a bunch during her Friday shift at the stand, located across from the club on U.S. Highway 93, near the stoplight.
A couple kids from the club cover shifts under a shaded canopy with the supervision of an adult from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. The adults take over during weekend sales when the club is closed. The kids and adults will be selling cherries until they are gone, and they started with about 4,000 pounds.
“We had two growers on Finley Point donate cherries this year, for the second year, and they are an exceptionally good crop,” said Diane Long, volunteer.
The red cherries are a mix of Lambert and Lapin, and according to the kids, “reindeers” is a better name for the yellowish-red Rainiers.
Jacob Dolence, 7, said selling cherries was about as fun as swimming at the club’s pool. He couldn’t figure out exactly which activity he liked the most. “I love this so much,” he said. “We sold a bunch of boxes. We give the cherries to people and take the money.”
Long said the kids are learning about the process of growing cherries, how to organize a business, and they are developing math skills. One customer bought a two-pound container of red cherries for $5 and a container of “reindeers” for $8. Long asked the kids if they remember what the total would be from a similar purchase. They quickly figured it out.
Long said people can still support the club when the cherries are gone by calling 406-676-5437.
