Crash response must be funded

Editor,
We can continue to debate how crash response costs should be paid for until the cows come home. But the bottom line is that there are costs involved. Somehow, they need to be paid for or services curtailed.
The perfect example of this is the recent letter by Leanna Fillman. As she chose to put it, “money for nothing, nothing is free.” The district she resides in does not provide crash response, and therefore, it costs her nothing.
To quote another band, “nothing from nothing is nothing.” As to her claim that insurance rates will go up, there are dozens of communities within the readership of this paper that are charging crash response fees, many for several years. I stand by the comments from the Insurance Office that for a number of reasons, there has been no increase in auto insurance rates as a result of communities seeking reimbursement for costs. Had there been such an increase, we would certainly be hearing from those affected.
