FRENCHTOWN – If you lose a game at the Class B/C softball state tournament, the road back to championship contention is a hard one.
Mission-Arlee-Charlo (MAC) took the hard road.
MAC started the tournament Thursday afternoon with a 7-6 victory over Glasgow, the number one seeded team out of the east. In that game, both Kenzie Couture and Frankie Smith had a home run and three RBIs.
MAC stumbled in the second round Friday morning, when they lost to eventual state champion Florence, 4-2.
The team rebounded Friday afternoon to beat Loyola, 10-1 to get back on the winning track. In the contest, Pitcher Ran’Dee Charlo went 2-for-5 at the plate and Azia Rain Umphrey went 2-for-4. Both girls hit a home run and batted in two RBIs.
In the late game Friday, MAC knocked off Glasgow 7-6 in an epic 11 inning battle, to reach the semifinal in the double-elimination tournament.
After winning two elimination games on Friday, MAC faced the Libby Loggers Saturday morning to decide which of the two teams would advance to the State Class B/C championship game against Florence.
MAC opened the game up with an early 2-0 lead over Libby. Starting pitcher Charlo had shut out the Loggers for four innings before Libby rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. Libby drove in two more runs in the sixth to make the final score 5-2.
“We did awesome,” MAC head coach Susan Weaselhead said. “We lost six seniors from last year. People didn’t even expect us to have a winning season and here we are third in the state.”
MAC’s senior starting pitcher Ran’Dee Charlo had a stellar tournament. From the pitcher’s circle, Charlo went 3-2 and eclipsed the 200 strike out mark for the season. At the plate, Charlo was 6-for-13 with a home run, a double and five RBIs.
Also for the MAC during the tournament, Azia Rain Umphrey had six hits, a home run, two doubles and four RBIs. Catcher Kenzie Couture had seven hits, a home run, a triple and four RBIs. Summer DarcAngelo had six hits, two doubles and two RBIs. Frankie Smith had six hits, a home run, a double and three RBIs.
