POLSON – Polson Pirates and Lady Pirates tennis squads battled foes and weather alike during the Northwestern A divisional tournament held in Polson. The two-day event that began May 16 lasted an extra day due to weather suspending play on the second day.
The boys won the overall team title with a score of 61 points while Whitefish placed second with 46. The Whitefish girls outscored Polson by 12 points to take the team title and dampen Polson’s hopes of 11 straight divisional team titles.
For the Lady Pirates, Cassie Carlyle defeated Columbia Falls’ Molly Schmitt, 6-2, 6-0, for the girl’s singles title and Whitefish’s Paige Sproul and Cailyn Ross fell 6-1, 6-2, to Polson’s Olivia Hewston and Kyler Lundeen in the double title match.
Whitefish’s Eric Holdhusen out lasted Pirate Colin Kenney, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) for the boy’s singles title. Pirates Matt Sitter and Cadis Chowning defeated Whitefish’s Brenden Buls and Thomas Carloss, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 for the doubles championship.
The Class A state tournament starts Thursday at Flathead Valley Community College courts.
