POLSON — A 28-year-old man was given a 10-year sentence to the Department of Corrections last week for violating his probation.
Jonathan Michael Cook, who has lived in Pablo, Charlo and Ronan over the years, was convicted of an amended charge of criminal endangerment as part of a plea agreement dated Aug. 25 that resulted in a three-year deferred sentence.
Cook was originally charged with two counts of sexual intercourse without consent with a minor. According to a court document, in 2015 a 13-year-old said Cook had sexual relations with the minor twice in 2009 and 2010.
Cook violated his probation numerous times since receiving the plea agreement.
According to a court document, he failed to attend or complete sex offender treatment and moved twice without updating his address with the sex offender registry. Cook was also arrested Dec. 3 and Jan. 16 and charged with possession of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia. According to a court document, he tested positive for methamphetamine on Dec. 7.
Prosecutor Ben Anciaux and defense attorney Jeff Wilson recommended that Cook receive an eight-year sentence with three years suspended, but Judge Kim Christopher didn’t agree.
She called Cook a threat to the community and recommended DOC accept him into the Nexus drug treatment program for men.
