RONAN – The Lady Loggers spoiled Ronan’s softball season opener Saturday with a 22-3 victory that ended in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.
But the Maidens never quit. After not scoring in the first four innings, the Maidens put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth.
“I was proud of my girls for not giving up,” Maidens’ head coach Kellie Manyhides said. “We have a very young team. It was a huge learning curve for some of them, and I really admired how, even though they knew we had already lost, they didn’t give up or come down on each other.”
For the Maidens, Marissa Mock went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Katlyn Santos went 1 for 3.
“We have a lot of young leaders and hard workers, so for the next few weeks we’ll be working on fundamentals: where to throw and when, who’s the cut-off, first and third situations,” Manyhides said. “I’m just happy that we finally have a field we can practice on, instead of being inside a small gym; that really limited what drills we could work on.”
The Maidens’ next game will be on April 6 when they host Columbia Falls.
