POLSON – Athletes from the Mission Valley Mariners baseball team donned ties and ditched their ball caps for Friday’s black-tie fundraiser dinner. The finely dressed Mariners served more than 200 diners their choice of either chicken or beef.
Mariner supporters came together and raised almost $5,500 during the event that was held at the KwaTaqNuk Resort and Casino.
Proceeds from the auction and dinner will be utilized to help cover costs for the upcoming baseball season like uniforms, equipment, travel and field maintenance.
The night was also an appreciation celebration of Jami Hanson’s 16-year stint as the Mariners’ skipper. At the end of last season, Coach Hanson stepped down to pursue other interests.
A product of the Mariners program himself, Hanson played for the first Mission Valley Mariners team in 1989.
During Hanson’s 16-year tenure, the Mariners won four Western A district titles, two State A championships in 2007 and 2012 and brought home the Class A Northwest Regional title in 2012. “It was a lot of road trips, a lot of miles,” coach Hanson said.
“It was a good run, lots of fun.”
