RONAN – On Friday night in the old Ronan High School gym, 14 area teams dipped, dove, ducked and dodged in a tournament to benefit the Chiefs’ and Maidens’ spring sports program.

The game of dodgeball has been a popular bruise-inducing childhood activity on school playgrounds as well as in physical education classes for years.

So, what better way to raise money for the spring sports programs, than to host a dodgeball tournament?

“Our spring sports program really didn’t have any fundraisers,” event organizer Brian Labbe said. “It was something I did in high school as a fundraiser and it was a good way to get the community involved.”

The inaugural dodgeball tournament raised roughly about $1,500 for the Ronan track and field, softball and tennis programs through team fees, spectator tickets and concessions sales.

As for the success of the tournament, “I think it went well. I couldn’t be any happier,” Labbe said. “(We had) great support from the community. Our turnout was a lot better than I actually expected for the first year.”

Placing first in the tournament were Jamie Buhr, Rich Forbis, Nate Lundeen, Jack Duffey, Andy Luedtke, Jim Myers and Joel Onsager of team Low Expectations. Team The Untouchaballs followed in second place.

Third place went to team “If you can dodge a wrench …”
