Editor,
"My thoughts and prayers are with those who died and with their families," does not quite do it, in my opinion, in the vain attempts to put proper words to the killing epidemic being heaped upon the world through suicide bombers, frightened dictators hanging on by a thread, angry and mentally disturbed people lashing out with rage, those who have lost hope in life and commit suicide, and the myriad of other reasons.
I firmly believe that the words we need to be hearing, paying attention to, saying to each other, writing over and over, have our leaders use, make a part of media content, and publicly speaking them out with no embarrassment or hesitation go something like this:
"As a species called humans, we have lost our way. We have lost our way in our minds, our ways of thinking. We have lost our way in our homes and families, our communities, our states, our nations, our world. We are motivated by fear. We are quick to react with anger and attack. We glorify the fighter, the combatant, the victor over others. Corporations and elected leaders thrive on greed and avarice.
Change is called for if we are to find our way again. One succinct way of expressing this change is to say, 'The change that is called for is for each of us to be motivated by love rather than fear.'
A mind motivated by fear is well understood. It produces anger, attack, and all manner of survival actions pitting one person, one group, one nation against another. A mind motivated by love is not so well understood, but it produces compassion, reason, listening skills, patience, self-awareness, inner strength, forgiveness, harmony, balance, health, wholeness, and non-violence."
So, how can this happen? First: See the value in change. Next: Want to change. Next: Learn how to change the mind and hence behavior. Next: Practice, practice, practice. And do the practicing with a lot of humor and understanding, without guilt, because we are all going to make mistakes along the way. Life is a classroom, so we might as well learn while here.
The journey will be fun. The journey will be healing to the body and to relationships. The journey will bring hope and new meaning to life. The journey will reveal to ourselves and others who and what we truly are in the eyes of our creator.
