POLSON —“It’s my first year at Jump Rope for Heart,” Hazel Kujala said, hopping with excitement. “My favorite is mousetrap.
Eight-year old Hazel is a third grader, and she joined 74 other Linderman students for the 17th annual “jump” March 7 in Linderman gym.
With music adding some fun, kids rotated through different jump rope activities — long ropes, a twirler swinging a rope in a circle, skip-its, individual ropes — as well as hopscotch mats, hurdles and hula hoops.
Thirsty kids could take a break for a cup of water, orange slices and popcorn. and then return to the gym for the hour-long event.
The kids also raised $5,034.57 for the American Heart Association to help prevent cardiovascular disease. The top four fundraisers were fourth-grader Alyssa Bedari, $506; second- grader Ella Anderson, $300; third-grader Zachary Plant, $291.65; and fourth-grader Ajalin Simahaw, $260.
Linderman school nurse Millie Nesladek, who coordinates the event with P.E. teacher Micki Stanley, said over its 17-year history at Linderman School, Jump Rope for Heart has amassed $100,955. The number of students participating ranged from 65 to 132 per year.
