News from Kicking Horse Job Corps
RONAN — Native Americans have the highest record of service per capita when compared with other ethnic groups. It seems appropriate that Veterans Day and Native American History Month are both celebrated in November.
On Thursday, November 10, 2016, Kicking Horse Job Corps celebrated the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ veterans and their families with a special program and luncheon. More than 40 veterans attended the event. All veterans were paired with a student to hear the veteran’s words of advice and experience. Veterans shared their personal stories including battles in World War II and coming home after the Vietnam War.
“Talking with the veterans and having a one-on-one made me feel really good to share this experience with them,” Leilani Whitehorse, a pharmacy tech student, said.
The program included several honor songs, a welcoming by CSKT Councilman Dennis Clairmont, a brief history of Native Americans in the military, a patriotic poem read by students, and closed with the crowd singing Lee Greenwood’s hit, “God Bless the USA.” The special luncheon prepared by the culinary staff and students featured roasted buffalo, chicken cordon bleu, a full salad bar, and huckleberry cheesecake to top it all off.
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” – John F. Kennedy
