ARLEE – It was anybody’s game as the last gridiron rumble started on Friday night for the Warriors and the Vikings before the playoffs get started.

“We’ve been pretty evenly matched,” Kyle Newman, Viking football assistant coach, said before the game.

Because of their record, the Vikings already secured a spot in the conference playoffs before the matchup with the Warriors.

“We’ve clenched conference with a win against Twin Bridges in the last game, so no worries,” he said. “But even though we have conference, we are not going in light.”

The Warriors won the last time the two teams met on the field but the outcome was switched on Friday. The Vikings cleared the board with a 52-0 sweep that even Coach Newman wasn’t expecting.

“We will win by a couple possessions, but it should be a strong game,” he said before the contest.

The Warriors fought hard in the first quarter and kept the Vikings from scoring until 2 minutes were left on the clock. Then Landers Smith made a 20-yard run to score. With seconds left, the Vikings scored again with a kickoff return from Jared Doty ending the first quarter, 18-0.

Brady Fryberger scored for the Vikings with a 4-yard pass from Smith, and Trent Dennison put more points on the board with a 42-yard run. At halftime, the score was 40-0.

The Vikings added two more touchdowns in the second half. Toby Odom had a 9-yard interception. Smith made two final touchdowns with a 32-yard run and 36-yard run.

“It’s down to three teams,” said Jim Taylor, team assistant and school principal. “We’ve had a good year, but we lost a lot of kids to graduation, so we will see.”

The Warriors were hoping to make it into postseason, but ended their season Friday night.

The Charlo Vikings football team (8-1, 8-0) will host Chester-Joplin-Inverness in the first-round game on Saturday, Oct. 29.
