CHARLO – Things couldn’t have gone much better for the Charlo Vikings and Lady Vikings this past weekend, as both teams came away with convincing victories. On the boys’ side, head coach Mike Brown said things went pretty good for his squad, allowing his bench to get some valuable playing time from the second quarter on.
“The boys were itching to get a game in, and I think they played pretty well and did good on defense,” Brown said. “The younger guys did a good job. Starting out, they were not as nervous, relaxing and playing the game in the flow.”
Of his younger guys, Kobe Cox seems to be a future delight on Brown’s varsity lineup.
“He’s gonna be one of the kids that’s a good outside shooter,” Brown said. “I think he can be a pure shooter like Dillon (Delaney) is now.”
Charlo jumped out to a 33-4 lead over the Tigers after just one quarter of play and led 44-10 at the break.
The Vikings continued to hold St. Regis from scoring in the second half, allowing the Tigers only eight points.
Tra Ludeman led Charlo with 12 points, while Dillon Delaney added nine.
St. Regis’ Jon Langella had 12 of its 18 points.
Charlo has a tough couple of weeks ahead of them, playing Two Eagle in Pablo Jan. 24 and Noxon at home Jan. 27, followed by a make-up game against Mission on the road Jan. 30.
“It’s gonna be a tough week,” Brown said. “Two Eagle at Two Eagle and Noxon are always tough ones. It’s not gonna get any easier for sure.”
Brown says the main things he’ll be focusing on in practice are rebounding and defense.
The Lady Vikings also took the court Jan. 21 against St. Regis, where Charlo used crippling defense to hold the Lady Tigers to only 13 points, allowing a Lady Viking victory of 55-13.
“We’re moving in the right direction,” Lady Viking head coach Bret Thompson said. “Our bench is starting to fill some roles. Every night someone different steps up.”
Charlo went on a 20-3 run in the first quarter and led 30-5 at the half. It was more of the same in the second half, as Charlo outscored the Lady Tigers 13-5 in the third and 12-3 in the fourth to end the game.
Dawn Blevins exploded out of the gate, putting up a game-high 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Ludeman also stepped up for Charlo, scoring 11 points, while Rachel Hoyt scored eight.
St. Regis was led by Pilar Cantrell-Field, who finished with seven points.
Thompson says his team still has a lot of improving to do, despite their 10-1 record.
“We need to not put shooters on the free throw line,” Thompson said. “We need to be more disciplined.”
This week Thompson says he’ll continue working with his girls on defense, ball control, turnovers, better shooting and conditioning.
The Lady Vikings host Noxon Jan. 27.
“Noxon’s a little bigger physically and they have two good scorers,” he said. “We need to limit shots and force the ball into non-scorers hands and force turnovers.”
