Playing in front of home fans for the first time since their successful 2015 football season, the Arlee Warriors took on Flint Creek on Friday, Sept. 2 hoping to show off their talents. The Warriors were down by 2 points going into halftime when Head Coach Todd Yocum gave an impressive pep talk causing the Warriors to come flying into the second half.
“The Titans line was just pounding us while we were on defense,” Yocum said. “I told them that we need to stop them while we are on defense and make the small adjustments.
”Holding the Titans to zero touchdowns in the third quarter and only one touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Warriors listened to their coach.
“Flint Creek had a great game plan and they executed it well,” Yocum said.“We had to buckle down and put a stop to them.”
The Warriors rallied back from their 2-point deficit to win the game 42-28.
Warrior Tyler Tanner scored five touchdowns and rushed 18 times for 125 yards. Teammate Rylan Crawford added 11 carries for 110 yards.
With the early success, Tanner is happy to see underclassmen stepping up.
“We are coming together as a group. We have a lot of young kids out there and I think they are meshing well with us,” Tanner said. “It was a great game and hard fought. We talked in the locker room and said, ‘second half is ours and let’s go out and get this.’”
In the Saturday, Aug. 27, game against Plains, the Warriors were also behind going into halftime. Tanner is most impressed with his team being able to fight until the end.
“We just go out and grind and grind and grind until the end,” Tanner said. “It is a good feeling when you earn the win.”
With a 2-0 record in the early season, the Warriors are finding a successful rhythm, but according to junior George Shick the team still has a lot of room for improvement.
“We had a couple false starts and need to work on discipline,” Shick said. “We just have to stay mentally tough and we will get where we need to be.”
Sophomore Gregory Whitesell also wants to see improvement in his personal game.
“I need to work on catching the ball and that just comes from working hard at practice,” Whitesell said. “We have areas to improve, but by week eight we (will be) one of the best teams in the conference.”
The Warriors will travel to Victor on Saturday, Sept. 10, for a 1 p.m. game.
