POLSON — Competitors arrived at the VFW banquet hall ready for a morning of competition July 28.
With beetles, ants, a daddy longlegs, and an earwig in two, 35 children got set to race their bugs during the event, organized by the North Lake County Public Library District.
Although earwigs are not recommended for the race, according to youth service librarian Kendra Mullison, this one was “exceptional.”
Other bugs excluded from competition include spiders, stinkbugs and flying insects, according to Mullison.
Prizes included a set of tee T-shirts designed and donated by Tami Morrison as well as bug-themed book bags, activity booklets, kites, and bubble wands.
“The library was especially grateful to the Kiwanis judges, who were only alerted to their involvement the evening before — but turned out in force and with amazing enthusiasm anyway,” Mullison said. “And of course to our competitors, who demonstrated phenomenal bug-corralling skills in the midst of happy chaos.”
Winners included Avery, Hazel, Ryder, Eli, Peyton, Logan, and Teague.
