ARLEE – Jarvis followed the Fourth of July parade route through the back roads in Arlee on Monday. He seemed a bit nervous with the sirens from emergency vehicles, children laughing, and horns honking, but it was to be expected.

“The noise scared him but he did well,” Megan Wieder said, adding that Jarvis is a miniature Hereford steer, and he had never been in a parade before.

Wieder is a senior at Mission High School. This is the ninth year she has raised an animal as part of her 4-H Club. She plans to show Jarvis at the Ronan Fair. The parade was his practice run.

The small town parade started out with a salute to the Mission Valley Honor Guard as they carried the flags. Hundreds of spectators watched as floats carrying everything from Girl Scouts to a reminder that Halloween isn’t far off.

Captain Tripp Hoback drove a replica of a fire engine made of cardboard, bright red paint, and duct tape. Smokey Bear also road in the parade followed by fancy cars, horses, and emergency response vehicles.

Azara (Morkert) and Robert Llewellyn were honored as the Grand Marshalls of the parade. Azara and Bob attended Arlee Schools and graduated in 1944.

Spectator Jason Solum painted his face with patriotic designs along with his grandkids and kids to honor relatives in the military.

“You’re only a dad once,” he said of celebrating with the kids.
