RONAN — The Ronan Police Department has teamed up with the Lake County DUI Task Force, St. Luke Community Healthcare, Family Health Pharmacy and R&R Pharmacy and purchased a Prescription Medication Disposal box from MedReturn.
The MedReturn box has been installed in the hallway at Ronan City Hall located at 207 Main Street SW. This permanent takeback box is for the public to safely dispose of unused or unneeded home medications.
Prescription drug abuse is a serious issue in our community. It’s unnecessary and unsafe to leave outdated medication in the home. Old, expired medications left in the home can be targeted by users. Some teens also target their parents’ current or expired prescription drugs to abuse, trade or sell in order to obtain alcohol or other drugs.
To help address this issue, the department has partnered with the organizations to establish a permanent location for the MedReturn Box. This will allow the public to dispose of their old medication year-round rather than waiting for an official drug takeback day in April.
St. Luke Community Healthcare has agreed to safely destroy the medication collected from the MedReturn box through a contracted company. This will help keep prescription medication out of our waterways and landfills.
