With spare change, found pennies, extra quarters and even Tooth Fairy money from Haley Willer, the Little Friends Preschool from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church saved $116.40 for the Mission Valley Animal Shelter.

The children and teacher Heather Holmes visited the shelter on May 16 to present the money and play with some cats and dogs.

The project began last fall when Holmes and the children sculpted clay piggy banks to save money for the animal shelter as part of the church’s stewardship program. They received some help from the congregation, too, Holmes said. The project tied into their end-of-the-year unit on money awareness and counting money.

The money was for the puppies and kittens, cat food and toys, the kids explained. But mostly, the children wanted to visit the cats and dogs.

First they visited the cat room, where Henry, a roly-poly orange cat, loved the attention. In the dog area, a year-old Australia Shepherd loved to play fetch and a black hound-mix puppy loved to be petted.

The children’s collection will be put to good use, too.

Shelter Manager Brenda Jones said the shelter always needs food — dog and puppy food, cat and kitten chow — plus durable, safe toys.
