Editor,
Mission Valley Aquatics has received a large amount of input regarding the Ridgewater and Kerr Dam Fields sites and would like to thank the community for that. The board has processed this input and has done some preliminary investigating that is causing them to lean away from the Kerr Dam Fields site.
The MVA goal, first and foremost, is to build a pool and program around it. The Kerr Dam site has become controversial and is interfering with our goals.
We appreciate the time, effort and support that was given by the city. There is no doubt that the Kerr Dam site is attractive because of its location, but the ground water saturation is on everyone's mind. There are strong feelings by the board that the money raised should go toward maximizing aquatic programming, not toward a building that would take our programming in another direction. The uncertainty of the city on future plans and size of ponds for stormwater makes it hard for us to visualize where we will be in the future.
The strong feelings that have been generated for or against have been beneficial for the board to process. As a group it has made us stronger and more united. The public response that has been generated will give us direction, exactly what is needed to maintain the greatest and best uses of our resources. The compassionate and urgent need to build a pool is more obvious than ever, and it is in our grasp.
A community meeting will be held on Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. We would like to solicit input prior to and during that meeting, a final decision will be made pending significant input from the community.
