Editor,

At the recent Polson Rural Fire District board meeting, the board voted to impose the following fees for traffic accident response:
1) If firefighters are called to a crash and spend less than an hour at the scene: $500 if special tools are not required or $750 if special tools are required to extricate a victim.

2) If firefighters are on the scene for more than an hour, $1,000 is added to the above ($1,500 and $1,750 respectively).

The board provided no justification of these amounts.

While I believe even the basic fees cannot be justified — once the truck is on the scene, there is very little, if any, additional cost for time spent there. To charge an additional $1,000 if they are on the scene more than an hour is outrageous.
