Editor,
Three trillion here, three trillion there, pretty soon we're talking real money. The Iraq mistake cost us that first three trillion and Afghanistan is probably exceeding that. But aside from our wars, just think of all the money in bailouts and prop-ups that our government has given out to help cover up the effects of pure greed.
As a nation, we can attempt to buy our way, spend our way, negotiate our way, and finesse our way out of the obvious effects of greed but none of this will work.
The only real solution to the greed syndrome, of course, is to first recognize and name it and then make a personal decision to change. We can all look at ourselves and our motivations on things and, if we are honest, admit that a sort of greedy attitude is behind much of what we have done in the past and possibly still do.
And quite obviously when greed is driving the attitudes and motivations of individuals charged with forming policies and making laws for a nation, that nation reaps what it sows. And America is, right now, having to come to grips with what has been sown for years and years in Washington politics. You can look at just about every major problem facing America today and trace it back to fear and greed. And fear and greed go hand in hand. The fear of something being taken away causes the greed to hang onto what we think we have and accumulate more.
True change comes from the bottom up. We, the American people, are the real hope for changing attitudes and behaviors of our elected leaders at all levels. We must set the example, not just complain about the problems and tragedies. Unless there is a change in attitudes and motivations of fear and greed within our nation, the effects will just keep popping up in new and creative ways.
The answer lies within each of us with the choices we make. That's the only way I see any hope of real change being made which will bring America back to being a nation of integrity, prosperity, honesty, and effective world leadership.
