HELENA – Two Montana schools have been honored as 2016 Green Ribbon Schools for their efforts in cutting energy costs, improving student health, and focusing on sustainability.
Pablo’s Two Eagle River School is one joined by Missoula’s Hellgate High School as two of 47 grade K-12 schools across the nation to receive the award. Just four Montana schools have been honored with Green Ribbon awards since the program launched in 2011.
With about 100 students, Two Eagle River School is going through its first-ever energy audit with the Bonneville Power Administration to identify ways to save energy and money. The school has developed a recycling program, reduced paper waste, and is working to build a school garden. The school’s sustainability program emphasizes traditional tribal beliefs when it comes to caring for the environment and people.
“Hellgate and Two Eagle River are placing a strong emphasis on sustainability and building a school environment for the future,” Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau said. “I’m so proud they’ve received national recognition for their innovative practices.”
