Arlee events planned for Earth Day

ARLEE — The community of Arlee in collaboration with area partners is planning a full day of Earth Day activities and celebrations on Friday, April 22. Focusing on the theme of “Pollinators,” the day will include planting trees and bushes, town cleanup, youth and family activities, education demonstrations and displays, storytelling and live music. 

The day starts in the parking lot of Hangin Art Gallery on Highway 93 at 10 a.m. with a Morning Song by Circle of Trust Youth Council with Elder Pat Pierre, followed by a blessing for the day, the earth and plantings and activities. Then teams of volunteers will plant trees, seedlings and native plants (donated by CSKT Forestry) on Jocko Valley bicycle trail along Jocko Road and among the walking trails behind the Arlee Fitness Center on Pow Wow Road.

Throughout the day there are opportunities to clean up areas of town and Club Unity will also be doing clean-up for community Elders from 1-3 p.m., meeting at the Arlee Fitness Center at 1 p.m.

Family activities include Build a Bee art project and Build a Straw Bee House, with demonstration by Rod Davis, retired extension agent, from noon-2 p.m. And the wonderful folks from Arlee Apiaries will do a presentation “From the Bee to the Honey Bear” during that time.

Other presentations and activities during the day include a demonstration of native plant salves, native games, plants and grasses to support pollinators, teas from local plants and herbs and their traditional uses and more.

At 5:30 p.m. the Circle of Trust Youth Storytelling Group will use storytelling and theater to tell the stories they have written including The Story of Honey, Wolf Song and Promise of Plants. This will be followed by a live pass-the-hat concert by Andre Floyd.

Activities will take place at Hangin Art Gallery and other locations in Arlee. The day has been a collaborative project of CSKT Circle of Trust Arlee Youth Council, Arlee CDC, Arlee Schools EAGLES and UNITY youth groups, Arlee Club Unity and others.
