News from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

RONAN — Seminary students from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Charlo, Ronan and Polson, ranging in age from 14-18, participated in a seminary bowl which would test their knowledge of the Old Testament, which was the current curriculum of study for this year’s seminary classes.

Students broke into five teams, inter-mingling the students from all seminary classes along with their Bishops and the local missionaries for the event.

They competed in games such as the Jeopardy trivia game, which included a daily double where students could compete in a physical challenge to earn extra points. Their knowledge was tested as they put the books of the Old Testament in order; they were given pictures of events in the Old Testament and were required to place them in chronological order; they raced to find one of 25 mastery scriptures after being given a doctrine or principle that applied; and were given references that would have them searching for the scripture and racing for the bell. All had a chance at bringing down the giant Goliath.

Leading the games were seminary teachers Cammy Maughan from Charlo’s seminary class, Anna Marie Leafty from Ronan and Nancy Eastham from Polson.

The seminary study program begins an hour or so prior to the start of school every morning where the curriculum of study rotates each year between the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Book of Mormon, and the Doctrine and Covenants.

All students received a certificate of participation for the event and prizes for high points, but as one seminary teacher stated, “All were winners.”

It is hoped that this event will be an annual event, lighting a fire and love of the scriptures for the students in Lake County seminaries and encouraging greater participation.

Seminary students participating from Ronan included Michael Yonkin, Thomas Crenshaw, Jamie Romero, Seth Bettweiser and Hannah Moss. Taylor McCready competed from Charlo, and Polson competitors were Jamie Olson, Brenna and Amber Clarke, Jacob Allen, Jamie Eastham, Ryan Lamphere and Harley Shepherd. Bishop Bryan Brown was the Bishop for both Ronan and Charlo seminaries. Bishop Adam Smith and his son Michael Smith, along with the Bishops counselor, Brother Lester Lundeen, represented Polson. Local missionaries Elder Crocket and Elder Munsen from Ronan and Sister Hallat and Sister Wach from Polson also participated.
