Former Polson Lady Pirate Breanne Kelley recently headed to University of Montana – Western to play volleyball for the Bulldogs. A well-rounded athlete, Kelley played volleyball, track, and basketball at Polson during her four-year, high school career. Kelley says playing volleyball in college has been a learning experience and a lot of fun. She is currently an outside-hitter for the Bulldogs and has loved taking on new challenges from head coach Lisa Griffiths to help her become a better athlete.
“I love it here,” Kelley said. “It’s a lot faster than in high school, we’ve already played eight games. I think our team is going to be a lot better than last year, we’ve got a lot of talent here.”
Kelley added her volleyball goals at UM-Western are to become better on defense and to become a better player overall, while having fun. She says she might also play basketball this winter, but is still unsure if she will take on that sport just yet.
She is currently majoring in Elementary Education, but says she isn’t sure if she will stay in that major.
Also playing for UM-Western is former Lady Pirate Sallie Sams.
Sams is playing middle-hitter for the Bulldogs. So far, she says she has loved the college experience and challenges that come with the new territory.
“Things are fast paced here,” Sams said. “I wasn’t used to the season starting so quick.”
She added that coach Griffiths has been a big help in teaching her new techniques she was unaware of while in high school.
“She’s a really good coach to learn from,” Sams said. “I really like it here.”
Sams’ goals for volleyball are to become an all-around better player and to also improve upon her blocking and hitting skills.
She is currently majoring in Biology.
